BARBADOS FAST FACTS AND FIGURES
CAPITAL: Bridgetown
POPULATION: Approximately 280,946 (July
2007 est.)
CLIMATE:
Eight to nine hours of sunshine most days. Temperature
between 75 F and 90 F year round.
Celsius and Fahrenheit
Conversion
June - November is Hurricane
Season. December to May is
considered Dry Season. But
don't let either of these govern
when you come to Barbados since
weather has a habit of changing.
-
BARBADOS CULTURE:
-
"Barbadians are
predominantly very nice and
friendly people. Of course
as is the case in any
country, there are a few bad
apples, but don’t let that
stop you from having an
enjoyable holiday. They
don’t dwell a lot on their
own history. They like to
incorporate the cultures of
the British and the
Americans into their day to
day activities and you could
say they are somewhat
Americanized. If you want to
know more about the culture,
visit the official
Barbados website."

-
HEALTH AND SAFETY:
-
"Barbados is one of the
safest islands in the
Caribbean. There are hardly
crimes against visitors,
maybe against two or three
Brits a year and that is it.
You may be offered drugs in
the street, but if you
decline politely the vendor
will leave you alone. There
are also vendors on the
beaches who sell anything
from aloe vera to
necklaces. Again, a polite
refusal usually does the
trick. The crime rate is
approximately .001%. Take
the usual precautions - make
sure you lock your doors and
windows when you leave your
apartment or room, don't
carry large sums of cash,
and don't walk in unlighted
streets late at night. Take
care as you would at home
and you will be fine."

GEOGRAPHY:
Barbados is the most
easterly of all the
Caribbean islands,
with coordinates of
13º North, 59.37º
West. This
166-square mile
island—21 miles long
and 14 miles wide—is
divided into 11
parishes and is
quite flat, the
highest point being
Mount Hillaby at 1,116 ft above sea level.
The tranquil west
coast on the
Caribbean Sea is
home to a colorful
harbor,
state-of-the-art
cruise ship terminal
and celebrated beach
resorts, luxury
hotels and villas
nestled amidst
secluded coves and
lush rolling
gardens. The east
coast on the
Atlantic is a
wind-swept wonder,
sporting rugged
formations awash
with waves of
champions, casual
beach houses and few
hotels, while the
south coast offers a vibrant center for dining and
entertainment, along with a broad selection of inns and hotels.
The
southeast coast is home to many surfing events and practice
sessions.
OFFICIAL LANGUAGE: English with a broad dialect.
